Douglas C. Throughout his career, Doug has secured more than 50 jury verdicts, primarily in medical malpractice and professional negligence litigation. His experience includes defending claims involving alleged brain damage, stroke, cardiac injury, surgical complications, and other serious medical outcomes.

Recent successes underscore the continued strength of Doug’s trial practice. In 2025, he and fellow Messner Reeves partner Matthew George obtained a defense verdict following a three-week trial involving an orthopedic spine surgeon accused of improperly placing a pedicle screw, allegedly resulting in permanent foot drop. The plaintiff sought more than $2 million in damages. In another significant matter, the team secured a defense verdict after a seven-day jury trial involving a psychiatric hospital and allegations initially seeking more than $20 million. In 2026, Doug and his colleagues also successfully defended a dentist against a professional negligence claim in which the plaintiff sought $500,000.

Doug’s accomplishments have earned substantial recognition from the legal profession. In 2014, Law Week Colorado named him one of its Lawyers of the Year following his successful defense of five significant medical malpractice cases at trial. The publication recognized not only his courtroom results, but also his understanding of the profound impact professional negligence claims can have on physicians and their careers.

Doug earned his Bachelor of Arts degree from the University of Colorado at Boulder in 1993, where he was a member of the varsity football team.
