National Business Law Firm Messner Reeves LLP Expands Phoenix Presence, Welcomes Rowan Smith

Smith added to firm’s growing Intellectual Property Group

PHOENIX Messner Reeves LLP, an award-winning national business law firm, has announced that Rowan Smith, an intellectual property attorney, is joining the growing firm at its new office located at the Fordham on Missouri Avenue in Phoenix. Smith, recognized as a Client Service All-star by BTI Consulting Group, will be joining his former partners at Messner Reeves to build out the firm’s national presence, specifically in IP.

“Today, we can share that we have one of the most experienced IP legal teams in the Phoenix market,” said Jim Smith, president of Messner Reeves LLP. “This team has worked together for more than 10 years and embodies Messner Reeves’ entrepreneurial spirit and drive to meet our clients’ needs across the nation.”

Smith is an experienced IP attorney who provides thoughtful and business-driven advice to clients of all sizes. He practices in an array of technology and intellectual property law areas, including patent and trademark prosecution, copyright registration, licensing, and technology-related transactions. His education and technical background are in electrical engineering and computer science and, before becoming a patent attorney, he worked for Honeywell Systems designing and developing technologies to assist in jet engine construction and testing. As a patent attorney, Smith has protected inventions in many technology areas, including electrical and mechanical systems, semiconductor assembly, test, and packaging, power amplifiers, computer processor design, and data security and transaction technologies.

“It’s with great confidence that we continue to build our entrepreneurial team of attorneys,” said Smith. “Expanding our physical office in Phoenix is a direct result of our sustained growth.”

Smith is a graduate of Arizona State University where he received his bachelor’s degree in electrical engineering and his JD degree from the Sandra Day O’Connor College of Law.

Prior to joining Messner Reeves LLP, Smith was a partner at Quarles and Brady, LLP where he managed a team of attorneys and paralegals to support the development of strategic IP portfolios for a number of multi-national companies.

“With his exemplary work in intellectual property, we have full confidence Rowan is going to make an excellent addition to our firm and provide our clients with the best counseling and business strategy possible,” added Smith. “This year promises to be another year of growth for our firm, and we are prepared to serve not only our startup and entrepreneur clients with their IP needs, but our expanding portfolio of mid-size to Fortune 500 clients.”

In 2018 Messner Reeves established offices in the Denver Tech Center, Salt Lake City and Newport Beach. Last year, despite the pandemic, the firm added the Phoenix office along with an office in Reno. Messner Reeves recently announced Partner Caleb Meyer as the firm’s new CEO with Founder Corky Messner’s transition to chairman.

In addition to its new office in Phoenix, Messner Reeves operates offices in Denver; Las Vegas; Los Angeles; Newport Beach, Calif.; New York; Reno, Nev.; Salt Lake City; and San Jose, Calif.
