Messner Reeves LLP Of Counsel Alyson Jaen recently published an article in MJBizDaily titled “Why Cannabis Operators Can’t Ignore Insurance in the Era of Climate Change.”
In the article, Alyson points out that while insurance is mandatory for cannabis businesses, it often slips through the cracks because it is often difficult to obtain. However, recent climate-related natural disasters such as Hurricane Helene and the Los Angeles wildfires proved that extreme weather events also affect businesses.
She also points to a study from the University of California Berkeley’s Cannabis Research Center that found $2.4 billion in damages and about 25% production loss resulting from wildfires and smoke between 2020 and 2021.
“Ultimately, insurance is designed to protect cannabis companies from growing threats related to climate change and natural disasters, as well as the usual day-to-day liabilities that come with doing business,” she says.
