At Messner Reeves, we’ve seen firsthand how our unwavering dedication to diversity, equity and inclusion (DEI) enhances our firm’s environment. It also allows us to deliver our clients more creative and effective solutions.
We appreciate and celebrate the distinct backgrounds and experiences of our team members. We see how each individual’s insights elevate our collective strengths. That’s why one of our core values is to attract, retain, and promote a varied group of attorneys and staff.
Our firm consistently demonstrates these DEI values through extensive mentoring programs, professional development training and client engagement opportunities. Overall, we nurture a setting where everyone feels valued and empowered. By equipping everyone with the necessary tools and support, we ensure everyone can achieve their highest potential.
DEI in Recruiting
Messner Reeves participates in the Colorado Pledge to Diversity program each year, underscoring our efforts to enhance diversity, equity and inclusion within the legal field.
While many legal practices primarily provide internships to second-year law students, we offer compensated opportunities to first-year students. Through this significant initiative, we aim to include students from diverse backgrounds.
We’re pleased to report that we onboard participants from this program each year, acknowledging the remarkable skills and promise they introduce to our firm.

DEI in Community Involvement
Messner Reeves’s commitment to diversity and social justice extends well into our community. We’re signatories to Colorado’s Diversity 1L Summer Program, offering paid positions to law students from different backgrounds. Bruce Montoya’s volunteering with the ABA’s Death Penalty Project has commuted a death sentence, underlining our desire to seek and enforce justice.
Montoya also co-founded the Colorado Hate Crimes Task Force, a nationally recognized educational model for students. This program uses mock trials to teach about hate crimes, allowing students to deliberate as jurors. Guided by facilitators, they discuss racial issues and the importance of stopping hate, promoting inclusivity and challenging discrimination.
