Messner Reeves LLP successfully obtained a U.S. patent for Syntervention, Inc., covering the company’s Swicker radiopaque surgical foam sponge, a medical device designed to reduce contamination risks and improve operating room efficiency.
Syntervention, a North Carolina–based company focused on preventing contamination in medical procedures, developed the Swicker sponge to address challenges such as retained sponges, inflammation, and infection from cotton lint.
Notable features of the Swicker sponge include:
- Lint-free, hydrophilic foam that absorbs fluids instantly and minimizes contamination risk.
- Reusable within a single procedure, reducing sponge counts and medical waste.
- Versatile forms and uses, including extensions for suction instruments and packing tools.
- Radiopaque markers that make the sponge visible on X-ray if retained, enhancing surgical safety.
“This patent reinforces Syntervention’s commitment to patient safety and innovation,” said CEO, Norm Furbush. “Swicker provides an efficient, contamination-resistant solution for surgical teams.”
“Protecting meaningful medical innovation is at the heart of our work,” said partner at Messner Reeves LLP. “We are proud to help Syntervention safeguard technology that supports safer and more efficient procedures.”
